On the upper floor of the Church of Santa Cruz do Castelo, the upper choir and a long corridor serve as a venue for temporary art exhibitions, usually featuring religious art. The photography exhibition “Amor Causa”, which portrays the Beatitudes through the lens of French photographer François Rousseau, is currently on display . The exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of the book “Amor Causa”, an artistic commission by Renova to François Rousseau, inspired by Christ’s teachings to the 12 Apostles (Matthew 5:5–7). Curated by Father João Norton, SJ, the exhibition aims to raise funds for the preservation of the cultural and religious heritage of the Church of Santa Cruz do Castelo. The photographic work was carried out in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, where François Rousseau discovered the person who portrayed Christ and the 12 citizens who took on the role of the Apostles, without resorting to models or artificial settings, choosing instead to photograph real people – people with lives, sometimes on the margins of society, marked by hardship and a raw beauty.
